Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
