Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
