The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Smog Post Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the capital recorded an air quality index over 500, which translates to 10x the recommended level established by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times above safe standards.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

Since 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional administration petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, the court approved the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital registered contamination reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

The dangerously high readings of pollution in the capital have continued as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the concentration of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Various Contamination Contributors

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, farmers routinely burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various research.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing ten thousand early mortalities per year in Delhi.
