Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
